What Are You Waiting For?
Most of us have been taught to thank God after the blessing — after the breakthrough, after the healing, after the new opportunity appears. But what if gratitude isn’t supposed to be a response? What if gratitude is the posture we carry before the blessing ever shows up?
Last night’s sermon hit my spirit like a reminder I didn’t even know I needed:
Gratitude isn’t what we give God after He moves… gratitude is what we show in anticipation before God moves.
Too often, we say:
“I’ll thank God when it works out.”
“I’ll praise God when the door opens.”
“I’ll rejoice when the blessing comes.”
But heaven asks us: What are you waiting for? Hasn’t He already been good?
1. Gratitude Isn’t the After — It’s the Before
One of the most powerful truths in Scripture is that praise precedes victory.
When Jesus fed the 5,000, He didn’t thank God after the miracle — He thanked Him before the bread multiplied.
“And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed…”
— John 6:11 (KJV)
Gratitude opened the door for the miracle.
Thanksgiving is what unlocks multiplication.
When we only thank God after something happens, we limit our praise to what our eyes can see.
But gratitude says:
“Lord, I don’t see it yet… but I trust You enough to thank You anyway.”
2. We Already Have So Much to Thank Him For
Sometimes we forget just how much God has already done.
How many storms He carried us through.
How many nights He held us together.
How many moments He provided when we didn’t know where help would come from.
And this part hits home for me and Chris every time…
3. Our Testimony: The 8 Months God Held Us Up
Back in 2000, Chris went eight months without a job.
Eight months of not knowing how things would work out.
Eight months of bills that didn’t stop coming.
Eight months of navigating uncertainty and trying to stay encouraged.
But you know what?
God held us every single day even when we didn’t know God like we know now.
We never missed a meal.
We never went without shelter.
We never lost our peace — even on the days we cried.
And when the blessing finally came, it wasn’t because we were strong…
It was because God was faithful.
Looking back now, I don’t thank Him because Chris eventually found a job —
I thank Him because He kept us the whole way through.
He blessed us before the blessing.
And that’s why gratitude matters.
4. Gratitude Positions Your Heart for Faith
Gratitude and faith walk hand-in-hand.
You cannot truly thank God for what He has already done without also believing He will continue to move on your behalf.
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God…”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)
Notice it says in everything — not after everything has improved.
Gratitude isn’t a reaction…
It’s a weapon.
A mindset.
A daily decision to say:
“Lord, You’ve been too faithful for me to act like I’m still waiting.”
5. What Are You Waiting For?
Why wait to thank God until you see the blessing when:
- He already kept you
- He already sustained you
- He already provided
- He already protected
- He already made a way
Gratitude says:
“God, I’m thanking You now because I know You’re not done.”
That’s the posture that heaven responds to.
That’s the posture that shifts atmospheres.
That’s the posture that reminds your soul that God is still in control.
🙏 Prayer
“Lord, thank You for every blessing I can see and every blessing I can’t. Thank You for keeping me, carrying me, and sustaining me long before my breakthrough arrives. Teach me to live with a heart of gratitude — not just after the miracle, but before it. I trust that what You’ve started, You will finish. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
